:: History

Ÿ A vast enclosure of 27 hectares dating from pre-Roman times filled the level ground of the "Chatelet" at Chestres.

Ÿ The name Vouziers first appeared in 1140. The Aisne and its tributaries provided the power for cornmills at the heart of a rich agricultural zone.

Ÿ François 1st in April 1516 restored fairs and markets and thus assured the prosperity of the town.

Ÿ About 1540 the superb Renaissance front of St. Maurille's church was built.

Ÿ The religious wars, successive invasions and the World Wars laid waste the countryside, each time plundered and pillaged.

Ÿ The birth of a Franco-Czechslovakian friendship :
In October 1918, the Czech volunteer forces with the Gouraud army secured the liberation of the Vouziers area. The treaty of Versailles confirmed the creation of Czechoslakia. The 25th May 1930 a school financed by a nationwide collection supported by numerous Czech associations and supplemented by the state was inaugurated. It bears the name of Thomas Masaryk, first President of the Czechoslovakian Republic (1918-1938). Today it is the Lycée Masaryk which occupies these grounds.

The statue of the Czech huntsman renders hommage to the soldiers of 1918.

Vouziers is twinned with Ratiskovice, a rural commune of 4000 inhabitants situated in Moravia on the frontier between the Czech and Slovak Republics. The Vouziers-Ratiskovice friendship committee organises meetings, exchanges and cultural events every year (The Dolanka Orchestra)

Member of "Cités unies" Vouziers is also twinned with Gräfenroda (Germany) and Civol (Senegal).

Cooperation and development aid operations have been carried out and are being carried out with this sub-prefecture in Senegal, close to the frontier with Mauritania.
